The Ark Development Initiative (‘Ark’) is a Community Based Organization registered in Voi, Kenya, operating in Taita Taveta county and the coastal region of Kenya.
The main objective of Ark is to eradicate poverty and to create wealth for the marginalized communities through the mobilization and consolidation of the communities’ own resources into local investment pools. These funds are utilized to finance the Ark members’ development initiatives for their own benefit.
Ark was founded 2010 by Amos Charo Saro with two strategic aims: one, establishing and supporting Financial Services Associations (FSAs) in the rural and semi urban areas, and two, providing financial and non-financial services to their members.
Ark consolidates essential diverse skills, approaches and experiences in banking, microfinance, food security and social welfare among others into a pool to effectively provide alternative livelihoods solutions to the low-income earning community members.
Ark is designed as a one stop shop for uplifting the living standards of low-income earners, enable them to enhance their development potential, improve food security levels, access to affordable housing, mitigate climate change and the cost of social needs through a sustainable model that is fully supported by the community members’ own funds.
The objectives of Ark are weaved around five key pillars that target the quest for better lives of the members and conserve nature for the current and future generations.
The pillars are:
- Economic Empowerment
- Food Security
- Low Cost Housing
- Natural Resources Management
- Socio Cultural Enhancement and Integration
Today, Ark is active in Taita Taveta county, Kwale county, Kilifi county, and Mombasa county.
